Be sure to check out the "web only" content, which includes interviews with:

  • Merrell Dickey, Director of Chapters & Corporate Relations for the USF Alumni Association
  • Counseling Specialist Susan Hurley of USF Polytechnic, winner of one of this year's PRIDE awards

Well over 100 people attended this year's event, our fifth annual, held for the fourth year in a row at the Gibbons Alumni Center on the USF Tampa campus.  Highlights included a special performance by Crescendo: The Tampa Bay Women's Chorus, and a talk by Betty Castor, former USF President, who just recently stepped down as the director of USF's Patel Center for Global Solutions.

The Spring GALA is made possible through the USF Alumni Association, the USF LGBT Alumni Society, the USF Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (CISOGI), the USF student PRIDE Alliance, the USF Safe Zone program, and members of the Tampa Bay LGBT community.

Recent Activities

Thanks to everyone who attended the 4th Annual GALA Reception and Awards on April 16, 2008.  Beautiful music and artwork provided the background for food, drink, and networking, as the Gibbons Alumni Center was swarming with USF alums, students, and members of the USF and greater Tampa Bay communities.  Our very special guest speaker was Tampa Mayor and USF alumna Pam Iorio, who gave a rousing talk on "Best Practices for Diversity and Inclusion" that earned her a standing ovation from the audience.  USF Provost Dr. Ralph Wilcox provided the opening remarks and reaffirmed USF's commitment to providing domestic partner benefits to all USF faculty and staff.

Three LGBT Pride Awards were presented to recognize outstanding contributions to LGBT issues by members of the USF and Tampa Bay communities.  Dr. Mario Hernandez (Florida Mental Health Institute) was given an LGBT Faculty Pride Award for his research in and committment to mental health in LGBT populations.  JoAnn Sullivan (doctoral candidate in Geography and Environmental Science & Policy) was given an LGBT Student Pride Award for her long history of involvement in the LGBT community, and especially her outreach to the transgendered community.  Finally, Karen Doering, J.D. of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and the speaker for our first ever GALA, received an LGBT Community Pride Award for her long history of legal LGBT advocacy in the Tampa Bay community and beyond.

Our special thanks to:

  • the students from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, who provided the musical prelude at the reception
  • VSA Arts of Florida, who provided the display of artwork
  • the USF PRIDE Alliance, who provided not only their help and energy, but also a large contingent of student participants
  • the USF Office of Diversity, especially Dr. Jose Hernandez, who works harder than anyone we've ever seen
  • the Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (CISOGI), especially Chair Dr. Karen Berkman
  • the USF Safe Zone Ally Program
  • the USF Botanical Gardens, who provided decorative plants, as well as a beautiful bromeliad that was presented to Mayor Iorio
  • and the staff from the USF Alumni Association, especially Merrell Dickey, LaToya Dowdell, and Tyrone Gray

who all worked tirelessly to make this the best GALA ever.

We Won an Award!! Congratulations to everyone involved with the USF LGBT Alumni Society. On March 13, 2007, we were given an award by the Tampa Bay Business Guild as the Outstanding LGBT Organization in the Tampa Bay area. Society steering committee member Jerry Miller attended the Guild's annual awards reception to accept.

Your participation in our events has put this group on the map and has positioned us to continue to meet the mission of the USF Alumni Association while making an impact on our local community! You so rock!

On Friday June 9, 2006 the USF Alumni Association Board of Directors unanimously accepted the application of the GALA alumni group to become an officially recognized constituent society within the USF Alumni Association. We are now officially the LGBT Alumni Society.

With official recognition, we'll be able to participate more fully with other alumni groups and become (no doubt) the stars of the USF Alumni Association!

Thanks to everyone who worked on, supported, and participated in our events. The great turnout we have had at all our events provided much support for our application and keeps the Society growing!
